Shadow Hearts creators Matsuzo Machida and Miyako Kato had an interview with GeekGamer.it and revealed some insight about the development of the series and a possible fourth game.
The first entry in the series had a distinct horror element in it that was abandoned in the following games. Machida revealed that he had received a lot of feedback that the game would be more successful if it was more like other JRPG franchises if those elements were minimized. He wanted to keep it intact as much, but it ultimately came down to political decisions.
Also of note is that Machida is currently working on a new game, but he is not at liberty to discuss the details of it. In response to being asked if he’d consider turning to Kickstarter for a new Shadow Hearts he replied, “I know crowd funding and if I was to have a potentially successful idea I wouldn’t mind to use it. I think highly of Suzuki, Inafune and all the other colleagues who bravely decided to try it, and I wish them the very best. I guess that there are people interested in an RPG with features from Shadow Hearts, but I also feel that they are a minority compared to fans of other RPGs in general. On a personal level, obviously the presence of such fans is indeed precious. Should I get the chance to, one day I would like to create something able to answer their expectations, and I would definitely throw all of myself into it.”
