Insomniac Games Unveils Song of the Deep, GameStop Makes Publishing Debut

So after a quick teaser trailer two days ago, Insomniac Games has finally pulled back the curtain and revealed their latest game, Song of the Deep. The game is the story of Merryn, a young girl who builds a submarine out of spare parts in order search the depths of the ocean for her father after he seemingly turns up lost during a fishing trip. As seen in the trailer below, this tale will take the form of a 2D metroidvania-style adventure with huge non-linear areas containing various obstacles to overcome and puzzles to solve.

As of the game’s debut, though, two other things have immediately stood out: One, the fact that we will now have two different metroidvania games in 2016 that each involve a lone person in a tiny submarine exploring vast undersea ruins. Second, the revelation that GameStop will be publishing Song of the Deep. Yes, the retail giant is now making a move into publishing games themselves, and will even sell physical copies in their stores. This news has been met with mixed reactions from the public, either from those who don’t trust GameStop or those who feel that such a partnership could benefit smaller games such as this.

Still, Song of the Deep is described as being a passion project for Insomniac Games inspired by the daughter of their Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings, and they’re even already looking into merchandise for the game such as children’s books and Funko vinyl dolls. Given the lack of major kid-friendly games on the market and the desire to see more indie games get the prominence they deserve (plus the fact that the game does look particularly good, of course), here’s hoping their project succeeds. Song of the Deep will be due out this Summer for XB1, PS4, and PC, available either in-store at GameStop or via digital download from online marketplaces for $14.99. Of course, you can also pre-order the game right now, because this is GameStop, after all…
