Teddy Dief, the lead designer on Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Drifter, is joining the team at Square Enix Montréal, according to a post on his website earlier today. Dief had previously worked at Disney Interactive and at his own Rad Dragon before moving to the Hyper Light team.
Dief will start his work as SE Montréal’s creative director in the coming weeks, alongside Renaud Bédard, the man behind Fez and who recently worked on Capy’s Below, who has also taken a job at the company.
Square Enix Montréal is a subdivision of Square, most recently behind the Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO series. Dief said in his post that he was wary at first when he was offered a position at a triple A studio, but that when he looked into the studio a bit more, he found that they were “doing it right.”
Hyper Light Drifter and Below are similar in their styles, so with Square picking up the designers behind both of those games, it seems likely that the next game from Montréal might look similar.
Hyper Light Drifter has done incredibly well so far, with $27,000 raised on Kickstarter to get it made, great reviews, and a PlayStation Vita version coming some time in the future.
