Sega ‘Investigating’ Shenmue 1 and 2 HD Remasters

Shenmue 1 and 2 has quite the fan following, but despite its praise, the only way to play the two games is still the Dreamcast. A concerned Shenmue fan addressed this today in Sega Europe’s Sega Central video asking if there’s a chance of Shenmue 1 and 2 being re-released for HD platforms. He goes on to add that with Shenmue 3 currently in development HD ports of the two would be nice to have before the game drops and it could give the game more exposure to those who never got the chance to play the original two. Dan Sheridan of Sega answered with the following:

“With regards to Shenmue I and II HD, of course we would love to release these tomorrow. Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue I and II, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

It sounds like you shouldn’t get your hopes for ports of the two Shenmue games, but not to rule out the possibility entirely.
