In conjunction with eight of the world’s most popular esports teams, the ESL Gaming Network has announced the World Esports Assocation, a new governing body to regulate esports.
WESA is aiming to “bring all esports stakeholders – players, teams, organizers and broadcasters – to the discussion table in order to bring much needed structure, predictable schedules and transparency to the scene.” To accomplish this, the organization will create a Player Council to represent players and give them a voice in the decision-making that goes into developing tournaments and other events.
This is the list of teams backing WESA:
- Natus Vincere
- G2 Esports
- Ninjas in Pyjamas
Whether or not WESA will take off given the inherent interest many publishers have in controlling the esports scene for their own games, like Activision with Call of Duty, Riot Games with League of Legends, Valve with Dota 2, etc. remains to be seen.
