Developer Secret Sorcery announced on Tuesday the first details for its debut PlayStation VR title, Tethered.
Alan McDermott, creative director at Secret Sorcery, explained over on the PlayStation Blog that Tethered “takes the best parts of a sandbox experience you might expect from a great strategy game and combines them with gentle puzzle mechanics that help pull you through the experience, all the while wrapping you up in a beautifully immersive universe.”
“With a simple premise at its core — gather and prepare by day, survive by night — our goal is to strike balance between comfort, simplicity, beauty and challenge,” he added.
Assuming the role of a Spirit Guardian, players must attempt to “return balance” to the Heavenly Archipelago, having been under attack from a wave of nocturnal creatures.
Not only must players search for an ancient life force, Spirit Energy, to help them purge the island of evil, but they must also raise their flock, The Peeps, and ensure their survival against enemy creatures.
According to McDermott, the unique art direction and visuals for Tethered are heavily inspired by the works of the award-winning Studio Ghibli and acclaimed Japanese film director Hayao Miyazaki.
The announcement trailer for Tethered has been released, too, which can be viewed below:
In the audio department, McDermott revealed that Secret Sorcery has brought Kenny Young, who worked on titles such as LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, on board for the project, as his contribution to the game’s music is “bringing the world of Tethered to life in ways we never imagined!”
McDermott believes that players will spend at least thirty to forty minutes during an average session with Tethered, allowing them to cover a wide range of activities in the world, including building their village, developing the skills of their Peeps, collecting Spirit Energy and discovering ancient artifacts.
“For us, comfort and fun gameplay are paramount, and Tethered is the result us staying focused on what’s important,” McDermott said. “We want VR to be for everyone, and that’s why we set out to make a game that is as easy to pick up as it is hard to put down.”
Secret Sorcery, which was founded in April 2015, is based in the North West of England and has recruited past employees from Rage Software and Driveclub developer Evolution Studios into its ranks.
Earlier this year, Secret Sorcery confirmed that it had entered into a partnership with Sony; the agreement reached between the developer and publisher meant that Tethered, which was unannounced at the time, would be an exclusive for PSVR.
Tethered is scheduled for release in the fall of 2016.
