E3 2016: Bethesda Explores Dishonored 2’s New Setting, Karnaca

On the Bethesda stage at E3, Harvey Smith, co-creative director at Arkane Studios, showed off the first gameplay for Dishonored 2 and gave an in-depth look at the new city of Karnaca.

A flythrough of the city gave us a look at Karnaca, which is based on southern European countries like Spain and Greece. This oceanside aesthetic is immensely different from Dunhill, the city of the first game, which was more akin to London during the industrial age. Karnaca is beautiful, both due to the setting and the incredible graphics.

During the flythrough, Smith mentioned some of the new features that will make Dishonored 2 more immersive, and will make the world feel more alive. The verticality of the city will allow Corvo and Emily new options in terms of traversal, as well as new ways to stalk your prey. Real time weather will challenge the player, by adding a level of chance to the game. A storm rolling in will hinder sight, but also hinder your enemies. Finally, skill trees will add more complexity to either Emily or Corvo’s powers, allowing players to choose how they want to play the game. A new array of features, as well as some kick butt graphics make Dishonored 2 not only a good looking game, but also a huge step up from an already beloved one.

From what was shown, Emily’s powers seem to naturally focus on stealth, although Smith did say that lethal and non-lethal, as well as stealth versus combat options are still a large part of the game. The demo featured a power called Domino, and a power called Shadow walk. Domino allows Emily to link enemies together unbeknownst to them, so when the walk away from each other, they will pull one another to the ground. Shadow Walk, which has been seen in previous trailers, can allow Emily to shimmy through tight spaces and traverse quickly, so that she can catch up to her enemies. Her arsenal also includes an ability to distract guards so that you can sneak past without alerting anyone.

Dishonored 2 will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 11, 2016. Check out details on the preorder bonuses here.
