Over the past five days, Hardcore Gamer has revealed its Best of E3 2016 Awards. All good things must come to an end and today we’re proud to present you with our Game of Show.
It’s understandable if this seems a bit like déjà vu. Although we didn’t name the original Titanfall as our Best of Show back at E3 2013, we were just as stoked on it as most every outlet out there. Heralded as a revolution in video games, the future of multiplayer and a Call of Duty killer, Titanfall racked up enough awards that they almost couldn’t fit ours on the booth at the time (luckily, they were able to fit it on top of an IGN badge or two…too bad there weren’t any gigantic Greg Miller faces to cover up at the time). The final product, however, turned out to be a bit of a different story. It was a good game; there’s no doubt about it. But it didn’t revolutionize multiplayer, it didn’t kill Call of Duty and many seemed to have moved on from it mere months after release. Instead of simply releasing a few sloppy sequels to milk whatever goodwill was left, EA and Respawn decided to go back to the drawing board and create a game that was not merely good, but the game-changing experience the first was intended to be.
There’s no doubt about it: Titanfall 2 looks great. Respawn practically took every complaint about the first game and rectified it while also adding new features gamers never even thought of. At the centerpiece of the experience is a proper campaign, which quite frankly looks awesome and the basis for a decent sci-fi film. With a little bit of inspiration from Transformers, Titanfall 2’s single player campaign looks to be one worth the purchase alone for those aversed to multiplayer. Those who love multiplayer, however, are in for a treat. This is a fast and fun experience that is hard to put down. It makes bad players feel badass and great players feel like superheroes.
If you would have told us a month ago we would be choosing Titanfall 2 as our Best of Show, we might have laughed at you or rolled up our car windows and said we didn’t carry any cash, but thankfully nobody thought that and we don’t have to eat crow. Even if we did, we’d savior every last gizzard of it to praise Titanfall 2 some more.
