Sega Announces New Retro 2D Sonic Platformer Sonic Mania

Well, the livestream for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th Anniversary Celebration has already become rather notorious, thanks to some horrendous audio quality. Underneath all of that, though, lied a pleasant surprise waiting in the wings: Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D Sonic game with a look and feel directly calling back to Sega’s 16-bit classics, as seen in the trailer below.

As seen in the video, the goal is to go back and take a good look at the style of games that made Sonic the Hedgehog such an icon in the first place. The end result appears to be the Shovel Knight approach of creating a game that truly feels like a lost classic of the ’90s, complete with help from independent game developers Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games, who have a lot of experience with such kinds of platformers and Sonic games. Sonic Mania will feature remixed levels from the classic games alongside completely new zones, and star Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as playable characters, complete with a new “Drop Dash” move.

Needless to day, it looks like quite the astonishing anniversary present indeed, even if we’ll have to wait until next year to play it. Sonic Mania is due out in Spring 2017 for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. No plans for a release on a Nintendo console have been mentioned yet, but then again, we still have to hear more about Nintendo’s console plans for 2017 as well. Hopefully this will be the proper ode to the Blue Blur that the fans have always wanted…
