Developer Rebellion have revealed the first in a series of story trailers for their upcoming WW2-set tactical shooter, Sniper Elite 4. Set during the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943, Sniper Elite 4 uses the factual backdrop of World War 2 at the time to tell the story of series protagonist Lieutenant Karl Fairburne who goes into Italy to help the country’s resistance movement to combat the Fascist regime in power and to once again uncover the mystery behind another reported Nazi “wunderwaffe” (or wonder weapon). Hosting the biggest game World of the series, Sniper Elite 4’s maps are roughly three times the size of those found in previous entry Sniper Elite 3.
But once again, the game aims to provide players the flexibility of choice in approaching both primary and secondary, optional objectives alike. As Rebellion explain, regarding the intertwining of character back-story and narrative via the PlayStation blog: “Because Sniper Elite always has been about player choice, it’s up to you the extent to which you want to delve into these stories. Prior to carrying out your mission, you can choose to talk to individuals from some of the factions, or head straight into the thick of the action. A stealthy approach in the midst of your mission might enable you to hear strategically useful conversations, or you can use your binoculars to access Allied Intel on individual troops.”
Releasing just under two months ahead of its main competitor in CI Games’ Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, time will tell if Rebellion’s respected WW2-based series can pull out another hit. Sniper Elite 4 will be available for PS4, Xbox One & PC on February 14. Check out the first entry in the story trailer series below.
