Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the Best-Selling Console Game of 2016

Despite a lukewarm reception and not-as-strong sales as its predecessor, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare managed to be the best-selling console game of 2016.

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the number one console video game in the U.S., based on year-to-date revenues from physical unit sales. The company also confirmed that it was the number one selling game for the month of November, beating back rival Battlefield 1. Overall, 2016 marks the eighth consecutive year that a Call of Duty game has been the best-selling game of the year.

“Call of Duty is retail’s #1 grossing console franchise in the U.S. for the 8th consecutive year and the boldly innovative Infinite Warfare is the #1 grossing console game of the year at retail in the U.S.,” said Eric Hirshberg, Activision’s CEO. “In addition to our annual blockbuster release, Call of Duty is about engaging fans year around. Black Ops 3 has had amazing engagement all year and now with the classic, boots on the ground gameplay of Modern Warfare Remastered, and the thrilling new experiences of Infinite Warfare, we have a great experience for every Call of Duty fan this holiday.”

This is truly a remarkable feat, especially considering just how much negativity has surrounded the game. The reveal trailer is the second-most disliked in YouTube history. Only Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ is more hated than that trailer. Though we enjoyed the game, critical reception overall is lower than any other Call of Duty game. Despite all this, and intense hype for rival Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare won the year.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
