Best of 2016 – Day Nine: Game of the Year

Hardcore Gamer’s 2016 Game of the Year: Owlboy

Oh, trust us when we say that choosing 2016’s Game of the Year was a difficult task indeed. We had to go through at least six different rounds of voting before we could decide which of our top three choices – Doom, Owlboy, or Titanfall 2 – was walking out of here with the top honors. But in the end, it was indeed Owlboy that ended up claiming first place. You could say it was an underdog story, with the scrappy little 2D indie platformer beating out a crop of big-budget titles after eight years of development. But those eight years were spent pouring love into every single area of Owlboy, and it shows.

Practically everything our little boy Otus and his adventure offer can easily match – or even rival – what triple-A gaming can offer, from a moving and engaging story to a wide variety of fun and action-packed gameplay elements and some of the most majestic and visually impressive levels and worlds possible. Some may view it as just a silly, simple indie platformer, but it is much, much more than that, and has rightfully earned its place as Hardcore Gamer’s Game of the Year for 2016. Bravo!
