Report: Deus Ex Franchise put on Hiatus in Favor of Marvel, Tomb Raider

Looking forward to a sequel to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided? You might be waiting a very long time.

The Deus Ex franchise has reportedly been place on hiatus following publisher Square Enix’s big, multi-year deal with Marvel. Despite numerous plot threads left open by Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Square Enix is in no hurry to develop the next game. According to Eurogamer, Square Enix will have Eidos Montreal work on other projects.

The shift in Eidos Montreal has to do with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s sales, which were far lower than expected. Square Enix has shifted a small amount of the studio’s developers to helping Crystal Dynamics develop their upcoming Avengers game. The majority of the staff are working on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the rumored third-entry in the current Tomb Raider franchise. Eurogamer also asserts that Eidos Montreal is working on a Guardians of the Galaxy game.

When asked to comment, Eidos Montreal did confirm that they are devoting their talents to working on Marvel projects, but would continue work on updates and new content for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launched last August on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Don’t expect to hear about upcoming Marvel projects from Square Enix until 2018.
