Twitch is partnering with several game developers and publishers to sell games and DLC via their service. On a streamer’s page an ad will appear just below the streaming window and clicking on it will allow the user to purchase it. Games sold through Twitch will have five percent of the profit given to the streamer. Matt McCloskey, VP of Commerce at Twitch, describes it as “a win-win.” Developers get more exposure and streamers get compensation in return. Buyers will receive Twitch Crates which will give the viewer access to emojis, badges and “Bits for Cheering” that would otherwise not be able to get.
These games available to purchase will be digital as according to a press release since they can only be played through publisher services like Uplay and through desktop apps. So far, Ubisoft, Telltale Games, Digital Extremes, Hi-Rez Studios, tinyBuild, Paradox Interactive, Trion Worlds and Vlambeer are confirmed to participate in this initiative. This service will start in the spring.
