Terraria Drops Spin-Off Developer After Issues

Terraria has had a spin-off in the works for well over a year. Terraria: Otherworld was announced back in 2015 and things seemed to go a little radio silent since then.

Otherworld was intended to have players set out to purify a world filled with Corruption by finding purifying towers. The game was said to have more strategy and RPG elements than the original game but also include new features such as tower defense mechanics and skill trees.

The silence was broken back in July 2016, when Re-Logic published a forum post saying Otherworld “needed quite a bit of work and even a good bit of rework in a number of areas”

In a recent post on the Terraria forum, however, Re-Logic has said it has taken Otherworld development away from Engine Software and handed development duties to Pipeworks who were the ones that worked on the console and mobile version of Terraria.

“Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) – the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule,” Re-Logic said. “It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. Clearly, had we known this would be the scenario way back then, we would have held off on announcing the game until a later time – but such is game development. That said, we are really happy and confident with the new team and new plan – and cannot wait to get back on track.”

Re-Logic plans to work with Pipeworks on picking apart the whole game so far from top to bottom and also sent out a warning to fans that things will go quiet for an extended amount of time whilst this happens.

What went wrong with the development from Engine Software? It is quite obviously clear that things were not going in the direction Re-Logic wanted the new game to go in and Engine Software did not meet the expectations of such a high profile release. Will Otherworld remain in development hell for the foreseeable future? We hope not.
