Tales Creators Try Something New With Dark Rose Valkyrie

Right up front, fans of the Tales games will want to pay attention to Idea Factory’s upcoming PlayStation 4 title, Dark Rose Valkyrie. Created by the talents of that series’ scenario writer, Takumi Miyajima and character designer Kosuke Fujishima, adherents to Bandai Namco’s JRPG series are definitely going to want to see the next thing from the creative teams’ minds. People who dig JRPGs in general are also going to want to keep an eye on this one, too.

In 1929, a meteorite crashed into Japan, bringing with it a virus that infects humanity, changing them into monstrosities dubbed Chimera. While humanity acted fast to quarantine the potential pandemic and cordoned off the Chimera from the healthy, Japan closed their borders and established a force by the name of ACID to exterminate the threat. Players will be placed in charge of a elite unit in ACID by the name of Special Force Valkyrie, tasked with handling the brunt of the work while the rest of the military force drinks Four Loko or something.

There appear to be various battle systems in place, including an Overdrive transformation for extra attack power, and customizable weapons and attack combos for that extra edge. How these work in the context of the game, of course, remains to be seen. What catches the eye in particular is the traitor system. According to Idea Factory:

Depending on your choices, a team member will betray you. Find the traitor in visual-novel style interrogation sequences, and change the game’s ending!

This brings to mind Atlus’ underrated Lost Dimension¬†for the Vita, where players must be wary of their own team in addition to the enemies at large. It worked there and I’m glad to see this idea finds its way to other titles. With a June 6 release date, Western players will soon have a chance to cleanse Japan of the infected creatures.
