Bandai Namco released a mysterious teaser video last week with the hashtag “Prepare to Dine”, and have now confirmed a new action RPG titled Code Vein. The game is being developed by the team that worked on the God eater series. Code Vein will have no connection to God Eater, and is its own separate IP. The developers have stated that the genre is unique, calling it a “dramatic exploration action RPG.”
Code Vein is a brand new title by Bandai Namco, focusing on dungeon exploration and combat. The world as described by Bandai Namco is in ruins, and players take up the role as revenants – vampires with supernatural abilities, exploring the world trying to find out why the world has fallen apart. To survive, revenants live in a secluded society called the “Vein”. A revenant isn’t just a vampire, but a being that has surpassed humanity while losing their memories – those short on blood turn into beasts called the lost.
The main feature in Code Vein is a buddy system, where players exploring dungeons can have an AI controlled character fight beside them through the dungeon. Combat will include close range weapons, ranging from swords, spears, hammers and great swords.
There are a few key techniques used in Code Vein:
Blood Veil – The Blood Veil is an equipment unique to the revenant, used to suck up blood from the lost. While in use, it appears in the form of clothing, and also functions as armor. While in use to suck up blood, it uses a mechanism for the purpose, and we see a change in the user’s mask as well.
Special Ability: Blood Smelting – This action becomes possible after acquiring blood from the lost after successfully sucking up their blood using Blood Veil. This allows you to power yourself up, debuff enemies, do direct attacks, and other uses.
Development is currently 35 percent complete, and there’s still a trailer due to launch on April 20, as shown in their teaser from last week, with a good chance that it will include the official announcement for Code Vein. The game is being made with Unreal Engine 4, and is set to release in 2018 – the platforms of which it will be coming out for are currently unannounced, the only information the team will confirm is that it will be available for console.”
