Thief developer Eidos Montreal has thrown cold water over a recent rumor concerning a new Thief game.
Those hoping for the return of the Thief franchise received a small glimmer of hope last week. Straight Up Films, who is developing a film based on the game, seemingly suggested that a new Thief game is also in development. The quote was later modified to remove any suggestion of a game, but the rumor has persisted. Well, Eidos Montreal has finally chimed in, and Thief fans won’t like the answer.
Eidos Montreal head of studio, David Anfossi, took to Twitter to comment on the rumor, and it’s pretty clear that a new Thief game isn’t happening:

This doesn’t mean a new Thief game won’t be released in the future, but it does mean that there won’t be a new game anytime soon. This really shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how busy the studio is with current projects. Eidos Montreal is currently helping Crystal Dynamics develop the Avengers project, and, if rumors are true, the company is developing the third game in the Tomb Raider reboot series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. With all these projects, it is unlikely they have anymore time for Thief.
