Sony Rolls out PlayStation 4 Software Update 5.0

Today, Sony has rolled out software update 5.0 (codenamed NOBUNAGA) and it comes with a few key changes that will help the PS4 with all sorts of quality of life improvements. This ranges from things like the new “Family on PlayStation Network”, system, the enhanced Twitch broadcast option for PS4 Pro and a plethora of other new features.

A number of these features were outlined when the beta program started, but there’s always a little more behind the curtain.

For those competitive players out there get ready for Team Tournaments on PS4, a new functionality that will have those competing against other teams for prizes and status. This feature while not live yet will be available October 5. Titles that will support Team Tournaments will be Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, World of Tanks and Mantis Burn Racing, and more on the way. Heading over to events section on the PS4 will show all the details for events and tournaments.

Teams will have their own owner and captain(s) who can manage the team, a customizable team page where team information will be available, upcoming and ongoing events that a team has registered for and competing in. Of course, it also comes with a team chat feature.

The 5.0 update now has a follow anyone feature, where before you could only follow Verified Accounts, now you can follow any user without being friends (depends on players privacy settings). This will allow for easier following of content creators, game broadcasters and other players in the community without going to the friends list.

Messages have also been updated with an additional feature. When sending a message that contains a link to a website the message will display a preview of the website, such as headlines and thumbnails.

Alongside the 5.0 update but outside the PS4 a few of the PS4 apps are getting updated too. With PlayStation Communities now, you can switch the app to landscape mode when flipping your phone sideways allowing a wider view of the app with easier scrolling capabilities. You’ll also be able to view and post animated GIFs on community walls. Additionally, the following languages are getting added: Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Romanian, Thai and Vietnamese.

With all the sticker craze PS4 is no slouch, now with stickers for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Horizon Zero Dawn being added. Following suit with PlayStation messages update the PlayStation Messages app will be updated to display previews of websites received with a link. The same languages above will be added as well.

Lots of big changes but all for the better, PlayStation software update 5.00 is available now.
