Life Is Strange: Before the Storm actor Rhianna DeVries has revealed that the junkyard scene from Episode 1: Awake “hurt a lot.”
DeVries, who is the voice and motion capture actor for Chloe Price, was asked during a Reddit AMA what she considered as her “most emotionally taxing moment” in Episode 1: Awake.
According to DeVries, the junkyard segment between Chloe and Rachel Amber was “pretty pivotal for me.”
“I had this moment in the booth where I found myself talking to someone that I love really deeply, and I remember leaving the booth feeling really impressed by Chloe as a character,” she said.
“I already felt connected to Chloe, but that scene in particular deepened my respect for her. At 16, I don’t know that I would’ve even had the gnards to face the girl I liked and told her that I wanted to be with her.”
It’s not the first time that DeVries has pointed to the importance of the junkyard scene, as she spoke about it in one of Before the Storm’s past trailers (posted below).
DeVries replaced Ashly Burch as the voice of Chloe for Before the Storm. Burch did not reprise her role from Life Is Strange because of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
In the same AMA, DeVries revealed that Chloe is “one of my favorite characters — if not my favorite character — that I’ve played to date.”
“Compared to other characters I’ve played, Chloe is the one that hits the closest to home and is the one that has required the most from me personally,” she explained.
“I wouldn’t say that I have a specific method for getting into character for Chloe, so much as I have to allow myself to face the really deeply personal and vulnerable parts of me in order to feel as connected to her as possible.”
Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, which was announced at E3 2017, is available for download on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Hardcore Gamer’s review for Episode 1: Awake praised its appeal to both Life Is Strange fans and newcomers, saying that “The best thing about Episode 1 is that you can jump in with the series here and still fall in love with it.”
