On the list of video games fit for film adaptions, Rampage isn’t exactly at the top. In fact, it’s near the bottom somewhere in between Pong and Neo Turf Masters. Yet against all odds, Warner Bros. has actually activated the video game adaption rights they secured from their acquisition of Midway in 2009. Rampage is a great game, but it’s not exactly a classic or remembered by all but the most devoted arcade gamers. In fact, we’d wager that Neo Geo’s similar King of the Monsters is even more relevant.
Nevertheless, WB has funded a big-budget adaption starring Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The first trailer was just released for the film and it’s even more surreal than the announcement of the film itself. Sticking surprisingly close to the plot of the game (which granted was about humans somehow turning into giant monsters), the movie looks to be nearly entirely giant monsters destroying Chicago.
It’s weird stuff and it’s hard to gauge whether it’ll be good or not. Director Brad Peyton has a spotty track record, helming the similar and decent San Andreas, but also being responsible for Incarnate and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.
