New God of War Preview Shows-Off Fifteen Minutes of New Gameplay

Krato’s return is only a month away, yet fans haven’t really gotten all that deep of a look into how the new God of War will actually play out. That is, they hadn’t until the release of a brand-new preview was released today. God of War’s basic combat mechanics were on full display in the new video. It was Kratos’ new weapon, the Leviathan Axe, that receives the largest share of the spotlight though. As the demo plays out, Kratos uses the axe to pull off all manner of entertaining moves. He throws and calls it back like Thor’s mighty hammer, makes it spin in place to deal combo damage to an enemy draugr and even embeds it in another monster to freeze it in place while he works over its ally with his bare hands.

Atreus, Kratos’ son, also gets some attention as his exact role in combat and adventuring is made more clear. Like Ellie from The Last of Us, Atrius is appears to be a useful companion rather than a helpless NPC that Kratos needs to go out of his way to protect. God of War fans who are looking forward to the new game’s release will most likely be pleased with what they find in this fifteen minute preview.

God of War releases for PS4 on April 20. For those who haven’t yet played a God of War game and would like to know if this is something for them, check out our review of the most recent entry in the series and find out.
