Overwatch League Stage 3 Week 1 Recap

Stage three has officially kicked off for the Overwatch League and it was pretty by the numbers, with only a few upsets.

Everything started off on Wednesday with the Shanghai Dragons and the Dallas Fuel. Dallas took the series 3-1. Then, the Los Angeles Valiant had the only surprising win over the Seoul Dynasty, although Seoul has been having a hard time lately. The Valiant won 4-0. Wednesday finished up with the San Fransisco Shock taking on the Los Angeles Gladiators and the Shock took the series 3-1.

Thursday night had the New York Excelsior picking up an unsurprising victory over the Florida Mayhem. It was followed up by a close 3-2 game between the Philadelphia Fusion and the Boston Uprising. Boston and Philly are probably the most interesting players in the league right now, because they are both good teams that are getting better with each Stage and are gunning for the playoffs each time, sometimes getting their shot in Philly’s case, and sometimes not. Thursday wrapped up with another close game between the London Spitfire and the Houston Outlaws, which ended with a Houston win.

The Los Angeles Gladiators and the Dallas Fuel started off the weekend with 3-1 victory for LA. The rest of the day was dominated by the Los Angeles Valiant and the Seoul Dynasty, who both took 4-0 wins over the Shanghai Dragons and the San Francisco Shock, respectively.

Week one finished up with a 3-1 series between the Philadelphia Fusion and the Florida Mayhem, with Philadelphia coming out on top. The Boston Uprising then took a 4-0 win over the Houston Outlaws and the New York Excelsior did the same to the London Spitfire.

This leaves the standings as follows:

  1. New York Excelsior
  2. Los Angeles Valiant
  3. Boston Uprising
  4. Philadelphia Fusion
  5. Seoul Dynasty
  6. Dallas Fuel
  7. Los Angeles Gladiators
  8. San Francisco Shock
  9. Houston Outlaws
  10. London Spitfire
  11. Florida Mayhem
  12. Shanghai Dragons

This is the highest ranking we’ve seen from the Los Angeles Valiant in a long while, but this could be a fluke due to the fact that it’s only week one of the Stage. Again, the rivalry between Philadelphia and Boston is interesting right now as they’re both getting better and could be fighting for a playoff spot this Stage.

In other, more disturbing Overwatch League news, Uprising player Jonathan “DreamKazper” Sanchez has been released from the team after allegations of sexual misconduct with a fourteen or fifteen year old girl. The announcement came from an official Boston Uprising tweet, which simply read, “We take all allegations of this nature very seriously and as a result DreamKazper has been suspended from the Boston Uprising indefinitely.” DreamKazper was one of the best DPS players in the league.

Overwatch’s Retribution event begins today, where you and three others will be able to play through a PvE survival mission which tells a story of Blackwatch back during the organization’s hay day. Genji, Reaper, McRee and Moira were the Blackwatch operatives on that job, so that’s who you’ll be playing as. A bunch of new skins are coming to Overwatch today as well, so be sure to check those out as well.

This week’s games start on Wednesday at 7pm EST.
