Nintendo Announces Participants for Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 Tournament

Nintendo has blown us away time after time since the Switch launched in 2017. The console is closing the gap on almost 18 million units sold worldwide in its first year alone and that number should jump up even more thanks to the beautiful lineup of games promised for 2018. While there are many standouts from the list, Nintendo fans have reason to rejoice even more as a new Super Smash Bros. has been announced for the Switch (in the meantime, may I suggest Brawlout as a diet Super Smash to brush off that rust). It wouldn’t be Nintendo’s fashion if they didn’t theatrically unveil details about the new Super Smash game at this year’s E3 2018 alongside a Smash-ing tournament of champions! That’s right, in addition to more details from E3, we’ll actually get to see this new game in all its glory at the Super Smash Bros. Invitational later this year.


The lineup of competitors is heavyweight and should provide intense gameplay for analysis. Nintendo recently revealed a global list of eight invited players who will compete to reign supreme:

MkLeo – A professional Super Smash Bros. for Wii U player from Mexico, maining Cloud and Marth. His favorite Nintendo game is Fire Emblem. He was the champion at GENESIS 4 and GENESIS 5. He was also the EVO Japan 2018 champion.

ZeRo – A professional Super Smash Bros. for Wii U player from Chile with a killer Meta Knight. His favorite Nintendo game is Xenoblade Chronicles. His hobbies include writing and motocross. He was the champion at EVO 2015 and GENESIS 3. He also won the Super Smash Bros. Invitational in 2014.

Armada – A professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player from Sweden. His favorite Nintendo game is Super Mario 64. His hobbies include ice hockey and table tennis. He’s the GENESIS 2 singles champion and the GENESIS 4 doubles champion. His deadly accuracy with Pit’s light arrows have earned him the nickname “Swedish Sniper”.

Abadango – A professional Super Smash Bros. for Wii U player from Japan and regarded as one of the best Mewtwo players in the world. His favorite Nintendo franchise is the Xenoblade series. His hobbies include watching anime and reading. He was the runner-up at EVO Japan 2018. He also ranked in the top five at EVO 2016 and GENESIS 4. 

Plup – A professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player from Florida and known as the best Samus in the world. His favorite Nintendo game is Super Metroid, and his favorite Nintendo memory is beating Super Metroid for the first time. He was the champion at GENESIS 5.

Mr. R – A professional Super Smash Bros. for Wii U player from the Netherlands is just waiting to unleash his world renowned Sheik. His favorite Nintendo game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. His hobbies include reading manga and traveling. He was the runner-up at EVO 2015. He is the undisputed best player in Europe, and currently dominates the continental tournament scene.

Lucky – A professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player from California and well known as one of the best Fox mains on the West Coast. His favorite Nintendo game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He ranked in the top five at EVO 2017 and at GENESIS 5.

Mang0 – A professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player from California and currently ranked 1st on the SoCal Melee Power Rankings. His favorite Nintendo game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. He was the champion at EVO 2014.

Each of these champs will be playing the game on the Nintendo Switch system for the first time ever at this event. Tune in as Nintendo launches its E3 celebration with two high-adrenaline days of competition, starting with the Splatoon 2 World Championship tournament on Monday, June 11 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. PT. Immediately follow that up with a side order of Smash as the Invitational 2018 Tournament begins on Tuesday, June 12. It’s bound to be fierce competition.
