E3 2018: Xbox Acquires Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Three Others

During the Xbox press briefing, Phil Spencer took a couple of minutes to announce that the publisher has acquired several formerly-independent studios as part of their initiative to bring Xbox users more unique gaming experiences. Spencer kicked-off the list with the announcement of a new studio called “The Initiative.” Following that he announced in rapid succession the acquisition of Ninja Theory (makers of the critically acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice), Playground Games (of Forza fame), Undead Labs and Compulsion Games.

The Xbox brand has been hard-up for meaningful exclusives lately, and have fallen under heavy criticism as a result. Given these acquisitions though, it might be safe to say that the publisher has recognized this weakness and is finally prepared to correct it.
