A reddit AMA just went down in the /r/AssassinsCreed subreddit a few hours ago and a few new details about the game have come to light in the questioning.
The AMA was with Jonathan Dumont, Creative Director behind Odyssey, and is probably the best guy to talk to if you want information on how the game will work and what they’ve added and taken away since Origins. The first question Dumont answered was about a progress tracker and whether or not the new Assassin’s Creed game would have one. Dumont said, “Players will have a full quest log. In addition to that, many of our systems have individual progress tracker. (E.G. Mercenary System).” This will step it up a notch from Origins, which had a somewhat barebones progress tracking system.
We learned that the box art for Odyssey will be reversible, with the male protagonist, Alexios on one side, and Kassandra, the female protagonist, on the other. There will also be a dynamic weather system in Odyssey, which will affect sailing and a day/night system that will affect the multiple “biomes and subregions” around the map in different ways.
For the lore nerds, Dumont has confirmed that the Broken Spear of Leonidas is not the only Piece of Eden that will make an appearance in Odyssey. So it seems Kassandra/Alexios will have something to do with the overarching story of the battle for Eden after all. Kassandra will also seemingly be the canonical protagonist of this story, as Dumont said there will be a “canon represented in the novel featuring Kassandra and her journey.” He also notes, however, that, “there is no right or wrong way [to play].” Your decisions will have an impact on your story, though, as dialogue choices and decisions made in quests will affect the outcome of your ending.
For those more interested in the gameplay than story, Dumont was asked about parkour puzzles and whether or not they would be returning. He replied with a resounding yes. You’ll also be able to recruit mercenaries in Odyssey much like you were able to do in Brotherhood, but this time they will be a part of your ship’s crew. When asked if the recruits will be of use on land, Dumont said, “yes, we have an ability called ‘Call to Arms’ that sends your recruits to distract and fight NPCs.”
Another redditor had a question about the ships in Odyssey, asking about the extent to which you’ll be able to upgrade it. Dumont replied saying, “You can upgrade your weapons, hull, and ramming device through progression. The crew can be recruited through the world to bring specific perks to your ship and cosmetic elements can also be applied to your ship and crew.”
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set for an October 15 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
