SEGA Offers Inside Look at Sonic Mania With Two-Part Developer Diary Series

The definitive version of Sonic Mania, Sonic Mania Plus, is almost here. Ever since the game released almost a year ago, Sonic Mania has enjoyed a reputation as being the best Sonic game to release since the originals on the SEGA Genesis. Some might say it’s even be better than its predecessors. Sonic Mania Plus represents a major addition to the base version of Sonic Mania, so interest is spiking once again as its release date draws closer. In recognition of this, SEGA has put together a two-part developer diary series that focuses on the creative process that brought the game to life.

This first part features an interview with Kazuyuki Hoshino, the Creative Director of Sonic Team and Tom Fry, the Art Director for Sonic Mania. Their conversation covers all manner of subjects including what incorporating Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo meant from an art perspective, and how they went about tweaking levels for Sonic Mania Plus’ “Encore Mode.” Whether one is interested in the game or not, it makes for an interesting watch.

Sonic Mania Plus launches on July 17 for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One. By itself, the game will sell for $29.99. However, those that already bought Sonic Mania can just grab the $4.99 Encore DLC pack if they want to enjoy all the new additions coming with Sonic Mania Plus.
