Rey Mysterio Jr. was already announced as a pre-order character for WWE 2K19, but many wondered if the newest AAA-level roster acquisition would be as well. Tonight, during Raw, it was announced that the newly-minted UFC Hall of Famer “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey will be in WWE 2K19. Not much of her was shown beyond her ring gear, but it will be interesting to see just how well her MMA and pro wrestling hybrid style translates to the game.
She has been an incredibly popular character to make in games for many years now, and this will be her first official non-UFC gaming appearance to date. She is also now the only person to be featured in the current-day UFC and WWE games since Brock Lesnar when he was in UFC Undisputed 3, EA UFC 1, and the WWE game series as well.
The trailer itself is fascinating to see because it ties so much wrestling history together. Ronda herself is a trailblazer and she got her “Rowdy” moniker from another one in Roddy Piper. The nickname came as a bit of a fluke when she asked her judo coach from childhood, the legendary “Judo” Gene Lebell for one and he gave her “Rowdy” after talking it over with Roddy himself. It was a way to keep Roddy’s name alive with him being largely retired and having it attached to a legend in Ronda helped him and his own legacy.
Both Ronda and Roddy did things their own way and Roddy let her know how proud he was of her in an interview – which 2K put audio up of in the trailer. It’s a tought-provoking bit of history to see her come out in Roddy’s jacket and pay homage to his kilt and iconic Hot Rod T-shirt design. It’s also a testament to a single font and T-shirt being perfectly-crafted because it holds up wonderfully over 30 years later and even crosses gender barriers. WWE 2K19 hits Steam, the PS4, and Xbox One on October 9.
