Epic Games is now estimated to be worth between $5 and $8 billion thanks to Fortnite.
Fortnite has been an unbelievable success for Epic Games since the introduction of the Battle Royale mode. During the time period of its release last September and May 2018, the game generated $1.2 billion and brought in over 125 million players. By the time 2018 ends, Fortnite is projected to bring over $2 billion, sending the value of Epic Games skyrocketing.
According to Bloomberg, Fortnite’s success has turned the game and engine developer into a company valued between $5 and $8 billion. In addition to Fortnite, Epic makes a killing off of royalty fees associated with Unreal Engine 4, which is the most heavily used game engine in the industry. CEO Tim Sweeney, the controlling shareholder, is now a billionaire thanks to the game’s success.
Fortnite was originally concieved as a co-op survival game where four friends would face off against waves of undead. Players would build bases and collect items to help them survive. That mode would be renamed Fornite: Save the World following the release of the Battle Royale mode. The Battle Royale mode sees one hundred players drop into a large map to see who can be the last man standing.
Fortnite is available to download now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Switch, iOS, and Android. The game features cross-play options for all platforms, excluding PS4.
