Making its mark on the PVP survival horror genre, Dead by Daylight continues to to expand its repertoire with new killers, survivors and gear. In a new trailer for upcoming content, the game teases Japanese inspired lore–possibly hinting to a new killer. The clip opens up with a view of a traditional Oni mask with a Japanese voice-over in the background. Darkness surrounds us as the the trailer pans over to see a katana missing from its rack. Viewers are left in suspense as we transition to a blood soaked floor and the missing katana wielded by unknown player in this horrific drama. The katana raises high and we are left with the blood-curdling screams of the unlucky victim. “The more we wait, the more pain we carry,” says the Japanese voice over before blacking out.
Much speculation among the DbD community points to the Kuchisake-onna myth: a woman brutally disfigured by her samurai husband during the Edo period comes back as a vengeful spirit. The legend tells of a woman behind a mask who stalks passersby. She approaches them to ask them if she’s pretty. When they respond affirmatively, she takes off her mask to show a twisted, cut up smile from ear-to-ear and asks again, “Am I pretty?” These are the last words victims hear before she vengefully slaughters them. No release date information for this content has been revealed at this time. Players interested in the game have the opportunity to catch up before this content drops, as Dead by Daylight is available for free for PS Plus members this month.
