Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Era: Golden Age of Piracy, 18th Century
Assassin: Edward Kenway
Templar Grand Master: Laureano Torres
Edward’s Story: A simple crew member on a ship, Edward Kenway’s life is forever changed when he stumbles upon the assassin Duncan Walpole. Taking his robes, Edward finds himself in the middle of the century’s long war between the Templars and Assassins. Meeting with the Templars, including Grand Master Laureano Torres, Edward learns of the Observatory, an ancient Isu site that can monitor anyone in the world. The only person who can unlock, however, is a Sage, a reincarnation of Juno’s husband, Aito. The current Sage is none other than Bartholomew Roberts.
Edward may wear the robes of an assassin, but he places his pirate duties first. Alongside famous pirates like Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Thatch and Charles Vane, Edward helps establish a pirate republic in Nassau. At the same time, he pursues Roberts and the Templars for profit. His friend, Mary Reed, who is secretly an assassin, attempts to recruit Edward to the cause, but rebuffs her. Instead, he allies himself with Roberts for a time to discover the location of the Observatory. Unfortunately, Roberts betrays him and the pirate republic collapses. He, alongside Mary Reed, are imprisoned for piracy.
Escaping from prison with the help of Ah Tabai, the leader of the Caribbean Assassins, Edward attempts to rescue Mary. However, she dies due to complications from childbirth. Her death changes Edward and convinces him to join the Assassins. He quickly moves to assassinate Roberts and, in a climactic duel at the Observatory, Laureano as well. With the Templars gone, Edward moves back to England to be with his daughter Jennifer, who he had only recently learn existed. His story ends in a theatre with Jennifer and his young son Haytham, all unaware of the misfortune that’ll hit their family.
Abstergo Agent’s Story: An Abstergo Entertainment employee, you’re hired to probe the ‘donated’ memories of Subject 17 (Desmond Miles) to help create a new video game. Secretly, the Templars hope to use the research to uncover Isu artifacts. You’re eventually contacted by the Assassins and a man named John, who both encourage you to explore and discover the Templar’s secrets. After hacking enough terminals, the building is put in lockdown as Abstergo investigates.
While under quarantine, John forces the player to check out the Animus Core where they encounter Juno in a digital form. She proclaims that the world is not ready for her and cannot possess you at this time. Enraged, John reveals he is a Sage and part of a group called the Instruments of the First Will. He intends to cover up his acts by killing you but is stopped and killed by Abstergo security. John is blamed for the hacking, and you’re released. In a call with Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings, they reveal they have never heard of this mysterious group.
Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Era: French and Indian War
Templar: Shay Patrick Cormac
Assassin Brotherhood Leader: Achilles Davenport
Shay’s Story: Once a loyal assassin, Shay’s world was turned upside down following a mission to Lisbon. Following a lead from a manuscript that showcases Isu temples across the globe, Shay accidentally causes an earthquake when trying to extract a Piece of Eden. With thousands dead, Shay angrily attempts to destroy the manuscript but is shot and left for dead by his friend, Liam.
Shay finds himself in New York City where he works to clean out gangs. He befriends Colonel George Monro, who eventually reveals he’s a Templar. Shay is ultimately inducted into the Templar Order and hunts down his old comrades until only two remain, Liam and Achilles Davenport, and tracks them down to a temple in the Arctic. Achilles realizes that Shay was right, but Liam accidentally triggers an earthquake. Shay kills Liam and Haytham cripples Achilles but leaves him alive at Shay’s request.
Haytham sends Shay off to track down an Isu artifact that managed to escape his clutches. After years of searching, Shay eventually arrives in Paris, France where he finds it in the hands of Charles Dorian. Killing him, Shay takes possession of the mysterious artifact.
Abstergo Agent’s Story: The player searches through Shay’s memories under the orders of Abstergo Entertainment, but accidentally triggers a virus that infects the Animus servers. The building goes into lockdown and only playing through Shay’s memories can fix it. After completing Shay’s story, the player is instructed by Templar Juhati Otso Berg to upload Shay’s memories to the Assassin servers to spread doubt. Berg thanks you and offers a choice; join the Templars or die.
