Level-5, the developers behind Professor Layton, Yo-Kai Watch are planning to return to a once-assumed cancelled project by the name of Ushiro, after nearly a decade of the project being put on ice. Originally canned back in 2010 and intended to release on Sony’s first foray into handheld gaming, via the PSP, Ushiro is a horror RPG focused around a character by the name of Reiichiro Ushiro. As a shinigami spirit, Reiichiro would grant players the ability to control and possess people which, in terms of gameplay, manifests as a series of turn-based battles wherein you come up against the personifications of the evil in people’s hearts.
Level-5’s president Akihiro Hino confirmed that the project would resume production, though stated that any planned release is still far off. Ushiro is now planned to come to Nintendo Switch and will serve as a contrast to the studio’s usual visual brand of bright, warm and vibrant worlds, instead focusing in on the project’s intended horror tone and narrative. You can see how the game was originally teased when it was shown off at the 2008 Tokyo Games Show in the trailer below.
