Super Mario Bros. is getting the silver screen treatment, but fans will have to wait until at least 2022 to see it.
Earlier this year, Nintendo and Illumination announced a partnership that would bring the Mushroom Kingdom to theatres. Since then, the duo have been hard at work bringing this vision to life. However, it’ll be a few years before fans get to see the fruit of their efforts.
Speaking with Variety, Illumination founder Chris Meledandri revealed that Super Mario Bros. is in ‘priority development.’ From his timetable, fans should see it around 2022. Currently, Illumination is working on The Secret Life of Pets 2 (June 2019), Minions 2 (July 2020), and Sing 2 (December 2020). Their latest film, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, hits theatres this Friday.
This is the second attempt to adapt Nintendo’s popular franchise for the big screen. The infamous 1993 film strayed far from the material and remains one of the worst films ever created. Bob Hoskins, who portrayed Mario, famously said it was one of the worst movies he ever made. For Super Mario Bros, Illumination intends to work closely with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
How the movie pans out is anyone’s guess at this point. We’ll continue to update you on the Super Mario Bros. film.
