Square Enix today announced an Octopath Traveler prequel for iOS and Android devices.
Octopath Traveler came out of nowhere to become one of the more beloved titles on Nintendo Switch. Square Enix’s throwback RPG with a unique art style captivated players and sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. It was a successful game, and now Square Enix intends to expand it into a franchise.
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (details translated by Gematsu) is a prequel for iOS and Android devices. The game takes place on the Orsterra continent where you play as the ‘Chosen One’ who must fight against a great evil. In a change from the previous title, players can now form eight-person parties. The button controls of the previous game has been replaced by swipe controls.
Currently, the game has only been announced for Japan. However, it’s likely it’ll end up coming to the west. Square Enix has been pretty good about bringing all their titles worldwide, especially those based on popular franchises.
For those hoping for another console Octopath experience, don’t worry. The official Twitter account sent out the following message:
“Everyone waiting for a new game on console, we’re sorry, but production will take a little while longer, so in the meantime, we hope you can enjoy [the smartphone game]!”
Hopefully, we’ll hear more about a western release for the prequel game and news on the proper follow-up some time soon.
