For anyone who has played Ace Attorney, they’re familiar with the fact that the series is filled from head to toe with puns and word play. This covers everything from the character names, to the very puzzles themselves. The most difficult aspect in localizing these games is that it all makes sense to a western audience. A direct translation would never work for a series so deep into Japanese culture, lore and jokes that those unfamiliar wouldn’t be able to make heads or tails of. So it’s up up to localization to come up with something that makes sense, while also trying to preserve the original idea. Janet Hsu is one of the main team members behind the localization, and covers all that in more in the latest Capcom blog update which those interested in can check out here. Be aware though for those who haven’t played that it does contain spoilers.
The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be available April 9 for PS4, Switch, Xbox One and PC.
