The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Announced

In the pantheon of fiction, none has been more influential to modern pop culture than Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. This is hardly a controversial statement, as the tale of heroism, villainy, and larger than life daring has reached outside the realm of fantasy to inform other people’s work in games, books, movies, and music. The world is so expansive, so meticulously designed, that there are always new tales to be told. Daedalic Entertainment, the makers of such games such as last years superlative State of Mind, have announced that they’ll be taking a crack at Middle-Earth with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

As the name suggests, the game will focus on the tragic frenemy that is Gollum, telling a fleshed out tale of how he came to be the withered husk of a hobbit that readers and movies goers came to know and pity. Promised to be an action/adventure built in the Unreal Engine, there is ample reason to believe that this could turn out well.

Per the announcement:

“We are extremely pleased to announce our partnership with multi-award-winning Daedalic Entertainment, to build an innovative, lore-centric game for discerning fans of The Lord of the Rings. With their focus on characters and story, enhanced by rich and evocative artwork, Daedalic is committed to ‘building games for readers who become gamers,’” commented Fredrica Drotos, Brand Officer for Middle-earth Enterprises. “We eagerly anticipate the release of Daedalic’s narrative-driven adventure gameplay, which is uniquely matched to the complex, deeply-nuanced world of Middle-earth, created by J.R.R. Tolkien.”

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most epic and renowned stories of all time – it’s an honor for us to have the opportunity to work on our own contribution to this universe,” said Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO and Co-Founder of Daedalic Entertainment. “In Gollum, players will assume the role of one of the most iconic characters in Middle-earth. We tell Gollum’s story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien. At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years. Other currently planned media productions based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work are testament to that.”

Sadly, it will be some time before we get to get our hands on this one. It is announced to be released in 2021 for PC and all “relevant consoles at that time.” With Daedalic’s narrative chops, and the fact that they are planning on taking some time with putting this one together, it should be worth the wait.
